This year however, we decided to host our own party at home, inviting friends and family over to join in on the fun. We have started the party planning and were not too surprised to learn the following rules and regulations when it comes to purchasing and owning fireworks.

• Only fireworks categorized as “Safe and Sane” can be purchased by the public. Safe and Sane fireworks are small sparklers and fuses, for example.
• “Dangerous” fireworks are most fireworks like torpedoes, rockets, and large sparklers and these are not allowed to be sold to the public.
• Safe and Sane fireworks may only be purchased between noon on June 28th and noon on July 6th. They may not be purchased at any other time of the year.
• Safe and Sane fireworks may only be purchased from state-licensed retailers.
• You must be at least 16 years old to purchase Safe and Sane fireworks.
• Safe and Sane fireworks must not be played with and set off within distance of flammable material and other individuals. This could be disastrous.

We have come to accept that no one can ever set off their own big fireworks show because they are dangerous. Only professionals with a special license can do so and we are perfectly content with having only Safe and Sane fireworks.

In other states, maybe all fireworks are illegal, no exceptions.

It is very important to read up on some of the laws of where you are going because you certainly do not want to be arrested out-of-state. This not only ruins your weekend, but it also creates a huge hassle for having to deal with the situation later on.

If you are staying right at home this July 4th and instead have friends and family coming from out-of-town, make sure to keep them in check and keep an eye on them. • “Dangerous Fireworks” are 100% illegal for the public to sell, purchase, and set off. Dangerous Fireworks include rockets, sparklers longer than 10 inches, torpedoes, roman candles, firecrackers, and more. Almost all fireworks, especially the ones that create a big boom in the sky. Dangerous Fireworks may only be sold to, purchased by, and set off by licensed professionals who organize the big, official fireworks show.
• “Safe and Sane Fireworks” are the select few fireworks that the public may sell, purchase, and set off. These are smaller grade and as the name says, safer.
• Safe and Sane Fireworks may only be sold between noon on June 28 and noon on July 6 each year through state-licensed retailers. The licenses automatically expire at noon on July 6, so they must be renewed the following year by June 15.
• One must be at least 16 years old in order to purchase Safe and Sane Fireworks.
• Fireworks may not be set off within 100 feet of gasoline or other flammable liquid. Obviously, it also may not be set off where it is likely to injure another person.

Violations to any of the above California fireworks laws are generally misdemeanors that carry a fine and up to a year in jail. However, in circumstances where the person is found with over 5,000 pounds of dangerous fireworks, they can face a fine of $5,000 or greater and more than 1 year in jail.
